Upper Extremity Amputees Testing New i-LIMB™ Hand
July 2007 — Redondo Beach, Calif.
Advanced Arm Dynamics, one of the nation’s leading providers
of upper extremity prostheses, announced today that it has been
testing the i-LIMB™ Hand with some of its patients. Working
with Touch Bionics, the new device has 5 individually powered digits
that can be controlled by the patient and that does virtually everything
a living human hand can do.
The fantasy of being able to replace living body parts with man-made
devices was once the province of TV shows like The Six Million Dollar
Man and movies such as RoboCop. Now, the nation’s leading
developer of upper extremity prostheses is transforming that fantasy
into reality.
“AAD is uniquely positioned to work with all of the world’s
leading manufacturers of components on cutting edge research and
development projects. Our work with the i-Limb hand has been exciting.
The patients we have fit with this device have been impressed with
its usefulness of the various grip patterns,” said Dan Conyers,
Northwest Clinical Director for AAD.”
The i-LIMB™ Hand brings new hope to people who have suffered
amputations resulting from industrial accidents, traffic accidents
or war-related injuries. It will replace simpler, less functional
hand prostheses now in use and will allow users to achieve a more
normal lifestyle and return to jobs that require higher levels of
manual dexterity.
This month, ten AAD patients are being fitted with the new hand,
advancing a research and development process that is now in its
final stages. Soon, amputees across the country will have access
to this startling technological breakthrough.
