The Upper-Extremity Dilemma
Upper-extremity amputees present a unique challenge to care providers because of their limited numbers and special needs. Current estimates indicate that in the United States there are approximately 18,500 new upper-extremity patients annually. Many are trauma-related; some are disease-related, while others have congenital deficiencies. Of these 18,500, only about half receive prosthetic services from approximately 4,500 prosthetic and orthotic facilities nationwide. As a result, the average prosthetist sees only one or two upper-extremity amputees a year.
- For many prosthetists, so few upper-extremity amputees do not justify the cost of advanced training and the associated time away from their facility.
- For many upper-extremity amputees, finding a local prosthetist with extensive knowledge of components and fitting and fabrication techniques is challenging, if not impossible.
- Referral sources often have a difficult time gathering the information necessary to recommend appropriate upper-extremity prosthetic rehabilitation with a qualified and experienced prosthetic provider.
- For amputees and facilities located outside the United States, it is often difficult to access an experienced upper-extremity practitioner, to obtain progressive componentry and techniques, and even more difficult to receive advanced on-site upper-extremity practitioner training.
